Webinar Summary

The analysis of terpenes in a commercial laboratory setting differs from the needs of a research laboratory. Rapid and accurate analysis can be a difficult task to accomplish but is critical for turnaround times and consistent data. Customer demand for terpene analysis has increased significantly in the last few years. Research and general interest surrounding terpenes has grown as it is a significant aspect of the complexities of the cannabis plant.

Terpenes are widespread throughout nature and are particularly abundant in cannabis. They are the main source of the unique aromas and flavors attributed to specific strains and provide the complex and interesting chemistry that helps to differentiate award winning cannabis. Terpenes are built from repeating units of isoprene and their designation is dependent on the number of isoprene units present. Due to the nature of these compounds, gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer is the preferred method of analysis. Traditional use of FID (flame ionization detectors) demands complete chromatographic separation and extended run times. To fully utilize the benefits of mass spectrometry in this complex analysis careful consideration must be taken in selection quantitation and qualifier ions.

During this webinar we will discuss:
  • The chemistry of terpenes and the need for rapid and accurate analysis
  • Utilizing selection quantitation and qualifier ions for successful mass spectrometry
